SOKCHO TAEKWONDO has it's roots going back to January 1985 when Mr. William Patterson founded Rutherglen Taekwondo Club. Although relatively small in numbers, the club was very successful within the Scottish Taekwondo scene at the time and produced some national champions from the ranks of it's students.
In November 1989 the senior student; Martin Hold became the Instructor after Mr. Patterson decided to stop teaching for personal reasons. Four of the original students of the Rutherglen club; Zahid Salim, Kirsteen Prior, Edward Tyrrell and Tracey Henderson were some of the 1st students to attain black belts, and for the good of taekwondo; went on to establish other taekwondo schools around the Glasgow area.
The Taekwondo Schools of Glasgow South, Glasgow East, Jamiat and Glasgow Govan had their roots from the Rutherglen club, the clubs worked to the same grading syllabus and technical standards and also acted as a group at competitions with coaches helping each other out. This and the fact that the Instructors of these clubs had a close working relationship as well as being good friends with each other was one of the reasons that the idea of an association was born, although the most important reason was in order to benefit the students of the individual clubs by bringing them closer together.
The Sokcho Taekwondo Group was born in April 2002. The name comes from the Korean "Heavenly City" / "City gifted from Heaven", and signifies for us our pride in coming from the City of Glasgow.
The logo which was created by Chris Campbell, (our newest student at the time) is a modernised image of the twisting kick logo used by the Glasgow South & Rutherglen clubs, and cleverly incorporates the Korean and Scottish flags in the image. Sokcho Taekwondo is one of the largest groups within Taekwondo Scotland with over 250 registered students. It is not a closed association and will consider applications from other taekwondo clubs and groups, and will give automatic membership to any student from the group that wishes to start a new club on qualifying as an Instructor.
