Match Reports - Marissa Petrie. Junior Female -67kg.
The semi-final against an aggressive local fighter went to a fourth round. The first 3 rounds were quite even, Marissa scoring with back kicks and a head kick whilst her opponent stuck to mid section turning kicks. So "Golden Point" after the scores were even at 6-6 at the end of the 3rd round. Her opponent attacked immediately on the restart, but Marissa covered well, stepped to the side and countered with a left leg turning kick to put her in the final. The -68 and +68kg Junior female divisions were combined meaning that Marissa had to move up a weight group in the final against a much heavier opponent; the 2010 British Champion who has also represented England at International level. Despite this Marissa seemed much more relaxed, choosing her kicks carefully and scoring with some solid back kicks. The referee seemed determined to give penalties against Marissa for a low back kick which clearly hit the body protector and should have scored and also for checking her opponent's leg even when Marissa's foot was in the air first!! Referee wrong on both occassions as proved by video footage. With 3 seconds of the match left and Marissa 2 points up; her opponent attempted a head kick which missed. The opposing coach, had one last ditch attempt and appealed to the referee who called the judges in even though none of them scored it. To the apparent annoyance of the referee and to a lesser extent the opposing coach; the judges very rightly refused to change their minds, again being proved right by video footage. Marissa winning 6-4 to take the Gold medal. |
